As I was watching the Auburn/Tennessee game Saturday night, I was browsing the facebook and twittersphere to see how fans were reacting to the performances of first year head coaches Gene Chizik and Lane Kiffin. The praises of Chizik have become high and mighty since the days of the "5-19 is not what we need!!" chants. Chizik has the staff to coach championship football, but not the depth. I think with an 8-4 record, Chizik should get Coach of the year.
I give a fair warning to Auburn fans to not drink the koolaid yet. I've come to realize that cooling off the expectations of SEC fans is like pouring a glass of water on a burning building. I use the 2008 Alabama season as an example. No one expected Alabama to go 12-0 in the regular season. Everyone was saying they were a year away. The Nicktator, on many occassions, pleaded for fans to keep their feet on the ground. With all of the near climatic euphoria, Alabama finished with an 0-2 post season.
All I'm saying is keep the euphoria to a realistic rate, because the heartbreak after the climax will feel worse than the depression before.
I banked on Johnathan Crompton to finally turn the curve and come alive under Lane Kiffin's offense. My bad! With a 2-3 record, is it time to hit the panic button? I say no. With the lackluster performance of Tennessee's offense this season, I've already seen signs that there is some deadwood that needs to be cut away. Alabama had the same problem in Nick Saban's first year.
With the recent dismissal of Brandon Warren at UT, there's a small light of progress that seems to be shining over Knoxville. Having said that, Kiffin will have to get it right in 2010. I'd say his chances are better being that Johnathan Crompton will have graduated.
Bobby Bowden is catching fire for the very slow start at Florida St. Trustees are asking him to ride off into the sunset and usher in a new era in Tallahassee. As legendary of a coach that Bowden is, I agree that the time has come. Florida St. has been in a steady decline since their appearance in the National Championship game in the 2000-01 season. No one can ever take away the amazing accomplishments and building an prestigious football program. However, there's an old saying that all good things must come to an end. Now, I think, that time is drawing near.
