Instead of trying to write conspiracy articles (again, not faulting the writer) to make Auburn feed their little brother syndrome, I decided to write a more thought provoking blog. It's what I do best.
After watching the Fiesta Bowl (as brutal in my opinion as it was), I heard a couple of questions being asked.
1) Should Boise St. be a #1 with their 14-0 record?
2) Should Boise St. be a Preseason Top 5 in 2010?
The answer to the first question is no. Alabama and Texas survived unscaved in the SEC and the Big XII. Let's face fact, the WAC is not the SEC or Big XII. I applaud the accomplishment of Boise St. Although I thought they should have beat TCU by more than seven. Boise St's non-conference schedule (with the exception of Oregon) doesn't give them a case compared to the Tide and Longhorns. I'm stating the obvious to most of you. The winner of the BCS Title should be the undisputed National Champion and if the AP does go against the grain, it will be absurd.
Having said that, the answer to the second question is an emphatic yes. I believe that opportunity has made the best people (in whatever profession) who they are today. Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, Keith Olbermann, etc. didn't get to where they are on an overnight train. Boise St. didn't get to where they are on an overnight train either. Chris Peterson has picked up the foundation that Dan Hawkins left and has turned it into a house.
Boise St's argument against them is that they don't play enough quality opponents. Be as it may the WAC is a very weak conference, their non-conference schedule in 2010 shows promise of making a strong case. Oregon St. (Pac-10 runner up), Virginia Tech (ACC), and Wyoming (Bowl winning MWC team) is the slate for next season.
In addition, most of the starters for Boise St. are sophomores and juniors. This team will be coming back next season. All of the Boise St detractors (I'm guilty sometimes) will beat their chest with their typical mid-major prejudice. Boise St. fans will sing the playoff song until their throat is hoarse. However, there should be no complaints in 2010 from any side. Boise St. has the setting, all they need is the opportunity. Putting Boise St. in the Top 5 preseason is the right thing to do. They won the games that were in front of them, let them get the opportunity to do it again for the real prize, not just for a bag of chips.
