Ole Miss to give Colonel Reb the boot!

I usually can rant about any story that pops up on the radar. However, a few stories leave me in a almost enraged state of mind. The probes for political correctness and tolerance become laughable and annoying all at the same time. Etiquite tells us there is a place and time to say and not say certain things. There's places and times to do and not do certain things. However, sometimes this political correctness and tolerance gospel begins to get ridiculous.

We've seen certain examples with some NCAA teams changing their nicknames from Indians to Red Wolves or Warhawks because Native Americans find it offensive. The Washington Redskins catch fire for their nickname because it's supposedly offensive. St. John's University was once the Redmen, now the Red Storm. It's not all liberal, once a minister pushed the New Jersey Devils to change their nickname because it was encouraging to Satan.

Really???? Really?????

Now you have the Ole Miss Rebels caving in. I understand wanting to distant themselves from the past stereotypes in Southern history. As a matter of fact, I encourage it because it's 2010 after all. However, Colonel Reb is just a mascot. Regardless of how white southern men were, he's still just a mascot. Is KFC going to have to take Colonel Sanders off their buckets because he represents or dressed like an old southern man from the 1800's?

Ole Miss has once again made themselves the punchline for the entire south and they just seem to be tripping on their own feet time and time again. As far as I know, the Rebels nickname will stay in tact. The only thing that's changing is the guy or girl dawning the Colonel Reb mascot won't be wearing it again.

I put my vote in for the new mascot to be a donkey because Ole Miss has made themselves look like jackasses once again. Remember the issue with the song "From Dixie with Love"? Remember the issue with the song "From Dixie with Love"? Remember how that issue came across?

Don't be surprised to see KKK stick their white hoods out into this issue and make Ole Miss and the rest of the south look like the backwoods inbred hicks.

What's next? New Orleans Saints or Los Angeles Angels of Anahiem have to change their name because it's offensive to athiest? The New York and San Fransisco Giants have to change their name because it's offensive to the vertically challenged? The Carolina Panthers have to change their logo because the panther on the logo is black?? WHEN DOES IT ALL END??? Do you realize now how idiotic this all sounds???? It's just a damn mascot, that's all it is. Stop bitching about mundane crap and focus on issues that really matter!
